When the weather was warmer, Franklin spent a lot of time outside in our raised garden beds. We thought he was safe, but one weekend he disappeared on a bender. We found him three houses down, across the street. This tortoise really can move. Apparently, he can climb too.
I found a perfect glass aquarium on Freecycle. If you’re not familiar with Freecycle, click on the link. It’s a great network of people committed to keeping their “junk” out of landfills. But in order to get Franklin into his new home, I needed to find a stand for his heavy aquarium.
I looked everywhere trying to find something that would work that would be inexpensive. I finally found this table/bench thingy at the St. Vincent thrift shop. I don’t know what it was, but the top was the exact size of the new aquarium. $10 dollars later, this beauty was mine.
The top rail thing was only held on with two screws, so after removing the screws, I could easily knock if off with a mallet.
The nice thing about this project was that because the aquarium completely covers the top of the bench, I didn’t have to fill any holes, or work too hard to fix the finish before I painted. A little sanding, and a couple of coats of black paint later…
Oops…I was in such a hurry to get this baby painted, I neglected my drop cloth.
It turned out great, just the perfect size for the aquarium. Here’s a shot of Franklin’s new digs with my dog Rosie. Rosie is fascinated with Franklin and really wants Franklin to come out so she can
bite befriend him.
Meet Franklin. Franklin is our Russian tortoise.
